Rainy days almost always call for wearing pajamas all day, building a pillow fort (instructions here) and a good book to curl up with and read till the stars come out. But before you start reading, you have to pick a good book! Here are some instructions on how.
1 - Pick A Genre
A genre is like a category for a book. Before you start browsing the shelves at your local library, you need to know what you are looking for, or at least close to it. Here are some genres you could pick:
- Fantasy
- Romance
- Dystopian
- Sci-Fi
- Thriller

If you don't know what to pick, base it off of what kind of movie you like to watch. Most book genres match up with movie genres, so they are a good thing to look off of.
If you like to watch movies like Star Wars or Marvel, an action book might be best. If you prefer Hallmark movies, you are better off with a romance. If you prefer to watch Sherlock Holmes, a mystery book may suit you best.
2 - Find an Award
Once you have a category chosen, you need to narrow down the options a little. There are plenty of good book awards a book can get. Finding a book award can make sure someone else thought it was a good book first. You do not want to end up with a horrible book.
Some Awards You Could Pick -
-The Jhon Newberry Medal
-The Edgar Awards
-The National Book Awards
You can find more book awards here.
3 - A Little Extra Research
So you have found your genre, you found books that won with that genre, now what? You might want to do one last search before you make a trip to your local library. That book you were thinking about reading may be the exact opposite of what you were looking for and end up having some not so great content.
before you read the book, find it on common sense media. Common sense media has helpfull reviews on most popular books, movies, and apps, without spoiling anything. It will also give you a rating, an overview, and a heads up on all the sketchy content that may be hidden between the pages of your book.
4 - Checking it Out
You found the perfect book and you want to read it so bad, but you don't want to buy it. What do you do? Go to a nearby library! Most libraries make it free to get an account, but be careful. If you lose the book or forget to bring it back, you will need to pay for it.
If you are completely overwhelmed by the massive amount of books surrounding you and have no clue where to start, ask the librarian! The librarian knows the library well and can help you with all of your book-related needs.
Happy reading, and see you soon!
