Want somewhere fun to hang out in the snow? Look no further! A snow fort is not only fun to make, but it is also fun to hang out in afterward.
Before you do anything in the snow or cold, you need to make sure you are dressed properly. Always wear a heavy coat or jacket in the snow. You will stay warmer if you wear things like gloves, a hat, a scarf, and boots as well.
Start by going outside and finding a good spot. You want a large, open area that is flat. This will make your fort less likely to collapse, and it will allow you to make a bigger fort.
There are two ways to make a snow fort. Lets start with the easiest one. This fort is great for snowball fights.
To begin your snow fort, try to find a large pile of snow. If you can't find a snow pile, grab a shovel and make your own pile. Try to take the snow from far away from your area. This pile will essentially do your work for you. The bigger the pile, the better. Your pile should be about twice the size you want your snow fort to be. If the biggest pile you find isn't big enough, or you can't find a pile at all, you will have to get more snow for the pile.
Once your pile is about twice the size you want your snow fort, begin packing it down. Squish all of the snow into a more compact pile. To do this, press down onto the snow hard. By the time you are done, you should be able to sit on the pile without siding off or sinking into the snow. The compact pile should be at least two inches taller and wider than the size of the interior that you want.
Now, you want to dig out the inside of your pile so you have thick walls of snow all around. If the temperature outside is below freezing, you can take some water and spray your walls. This isn't necessary, but it will freeze and make the walls stronger. If you choose to do this step, you will want to wait 30-60 minutes for it to freeze.
Once you're done, if you want you can build up your walls some more, add a door, or decorate the outside. Now for the other fort type. This fort looks nicer, but takes longer. Some things you will need besides snow are: Multiple large containers with high walls of the same size, (at least 5) a cup, access to cold water from indoors, and temperatures under 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
First, you want to pack snow into all your containers. Make sure you pack as tight as possible. A good way to do this is to put all your weight on it. Now, pour a little bit of water into each container. Make sure the water doesn't puddle in the bottom. If the water melts the snow, put some more snow on top and add a bit more water. Wait 30-90 minutes until the snow is hard and a bit frozen, then carefully demold the snow. Repeat until you have 50-150 snow bricks. This might take multiple days.
Now its time to assemble. Place some snow bricks around in a circle. Depending on how many bricks you have, you might want to make it smaller or bigger. Now, use the same amount of bricks to make the same size circle on top. But on every layer, you want to offset the bricks so each brick lays between two other bricks. Continue until you have used all of your bricks. Then, make a door and decorate the fort if you want.
Have fun, stay warm, and see you soon!
